Overview

Changes in Expectations and Requirements from Stakeholders and the Importance of Global Governance

In recent years, climate change has become a topic of great social concern, as we are increasingly experiencing the changes in natural phenomena around the world, such as sea-level rise due to the global warming, uncontrollable wildfires, and large-scale typhoons. Moreover, social issues such as improvement of working environment, protection of human rights, promotion of diversity and inclusiveness, and corporate involvement with local communities are also becoming more apparent around the world with the progress of corporate globalization. Based on these situations and changes in people’s awareness, corporate managements, and investors, especially those seeking medium-to-long term returns and sustainability, are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that it is no longer possible to achieve sustainable economic development and market growth with the conventional approach, and that it is difficult for individual companies to continue to survive and grow in business. In addition, the people are becoming more concerned about compliance and fraud issues by companies than ever before, and the importance of establishing and operating an appropriate internal control system, disciplining corporate management, and defining and fostering a desirable corporate culture has never been greater than ever.

Individual companies are required to break away from the conventional approach of managing their business which is merely to pursue short-term sales and profits, and it is essential for the companies to develop and operate an internal control system including risk/compliance management, and to define and promote a desirable risk/compliance culture under the appropriate global-based “G” (Governance) in addition to addressing “E” (Environmental) and “S” (Social) issues. That is, it is becoming increasingly important to correctly understand the “E” and “S” related expectations and requirements of different stakeholders, and to enhance the global-based “G” (Governance) as a base for corporate management.
